  • Do you need a CPA? Not to start: fewer than 1% of staff postings require it. To move up, it starts deciding which jobs are open to you. Manager postings that require a CPA, by kind of work: Audit at CPA firms 79%, 135 postings; Tax at CPA firms 71%, 317 postings; Tax in industry and government 31%, 36 postings; Accounting in industry and government 15%, 92 postings; Other work at CPA firms 12%, 51 postings; Internal audit (industry) 9%, 43 postings.
  • What does the CPA unlock? Posted pay climbs from $75k at staff level to $140k at manager, and manager is where the license becomes the norm: 54% of manager postings require a CPA, vs 0% at staff level. It depends on the level. At manager and senior manager, posted pay is about the same whether or not the posting requires a CPA (manager: $140k when the posting requires a CPA vs $140k when it doesn't say). At senior and director+, postings that require it list more (+8% at senior, +23% at director+), partly because those are often bigger roles at bigger employers. Either way, the bigger effect is above: which jobs are open to you.
  • Will an employer pay for it? Often, yes. 199 employers say in their postings or careers pages that they help pay for the CPA exam, so the cost can land on the firm, not you.
